Bile Duct Cancer Surgery in India – Brigadier Dr. Rajnish Talwar

Expert Surgical Treatment for Bile Duct Cancer

Bile duct cancer, also known as cholangiocarcinoma, is a rare and aggressive cancer that affects the bile ducts, which carry bile from the liver to the small intestine. When diagnosed early, surgical treatment can be effective. Brigadier Dr. Rajnish Talwar, a leading gastrointestinal cancer surgeon in India, specializes in providing cutting-edge surgery for bile duct cancer, aiming to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.

What is Bile Duct Cancer?

Bile duct cancer occurs when cancerous cells develop in the bile ducts, which are part of the liver’s biliary system. There are three types of bile duct cancer:

  • Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma: Cancer that develops inside the liver’s bile ducts.
  • Perihilar Cholangiocarcinoma: Cancer that occurs where the bile ducts join outside the liver, often referred to as Klatskin tumors.
  • Distal Cholangiocarcinoma: Cancer located near where the bile duct enters the small intestine.

Risk factors for bile duct cancer include:

  • Chronic liver diseases, such as cirrhosis or hepatitis.
  • Primary sclerosing cholangitis (a condition causing bile duct inflammation).
  • Gallstones or infection of the bile ducts.
  • Exposure to certain chemicals or toxins.
  • Age (more common in individuals over 65).

Common symptoms of bile duct cancer include:

  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
  • Abdominal pain (particularly in the upper right side)
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Dark urine or light-colored stool
  • Loss of appetite

Types of Bile Duct Cancer Surgery

Surgery is the primary treatment for localized bile duct cancer. Dr. Rajnish Talwar offers several surgical options, depending on the location and stage of the cancer:

  • Bile Duct Resection: Removal of the affected portion of the bile duct. This procedure may be combined with the removal of the gallbladder or part of the liver if necessary.
  • Liver Resection: In cases where cancer has spread to the liver, the affected portion of the liver may be removed.
  • Whipple Procedure (Pancreaticoduodenectomy): For perihilar or distal bile duct cancer, this complex surgery involves the removal of part of the bile duct, pancreas, gallbladder, and sometimes part of the small intestine. The digestive system is reconstructed to restore normal function.
  • Liver Transplantation: In cases where the bile duct cancer is associated with cirrhosis or other liver diseases, a liver transplant may be considered as part of treatment.
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery: In some cases, laparoscopic or robotic surgery techniques can be used to remove the tumor, resulting in smaller incisions, less pain, and quicker recovery.
